One of the smallest inhabited island of the US Virgin Islands, Saint Thomas stretches over 31 square miles. The capital, Charlotte Amalie, is referred to as Downtown and boasts approximately 300 shops selling everything from hand-made jewellery to quaint souvenir gifts. Downtown is where you’ll find plenty of bars and venues presenting live music while Frenchtown is a classier area with cocktail bars and a welcoming atmosphere.
Make sure to visit Charlotte Amalie Harbour, one of the most beautiful harbour settings in the world and Paradise Point, an area offering outstanding views of the harbour, while being surrounded by colourful birds and exotic flowers. In addition to the amazing shopping opportunities, Magen’s Bay is one of the most popular destinations on the island, with beautiful white sandy beaches and a handful of bars amongst some quaint boutiques.
Every traveller should visit Coral World Ocean Park at least once when on Saint Thomas, the unique undersea observatory is a wonder to behold and there are many excursions. Cultural travellers may prefer Fort Christian, a Danish built fort dating back to the 1600’s with an informative museum and panoramic views of the harbour from the Fort’s roof. If you’re only visiting Saint Thomas for a short time, make sure to take an island tour, available from most cities, it is the best way to get the most out of the island.
